About the Art
Reilly Fitzgerald’s Fishing for Halibut offers a glimpse into the timeless rhythm of life along Newfoundland’s rugged coast. Against the vast expanse of open water, a lone fisherman patiently waits for his catch, a scene both familiar and essential to those who make their living from the sea.
The fisherman in this piece is Ray, a close friend and patron of Reilly’s. Ray and his spouse reside in La Poile, NL, a small, isolated community on the southwest coast of Newfoundland. With no road access, La Poile is home to only about 60 residents (as of 2021) and is connected to the outside world by ferry from Rose Blanche. In this quiet, sea-bound village, fishing isn’t just a livelihood—it’s a way of life.
You can find Reilly’s art at Fitzgerald Gallery & Arts Studio, his daughter Kaeleigh’s shop in Clarenville, NL. Now, Fishing for Halibut invites you to experience a piece of Newfoundland’s maritime heritage, one puzzle piece at a time.
