StumpCraft puzzles are generally more challenging than standard ribbon-cut jigsaws—especially if you’ve never tried a wooden, laser-cut puzzle before. There may be a bit of a learning curve on your first attempt, but that’s part of the fun!
As a general guide, you can expect your first StumpCraft puzzle to take two to four times longer than a typical ribbon-cut puzzle of the same piece count. Keep in mind that piece count and overall puzzle size also play a role in the difficulty level.
To help both newcomers and seasoned puzzlers find the perfect fit, we’ve created a new Puzzle Picker Quiz! It’s a fun and easy way to get matched with a puzzle based on your preferences—and it’s also a great tool if you’re looking to gift a puzzle to someone else but aren’t sure where to start. Click here to give the quiz a go!
First off—don’t be too hard on yourself!
StumpCraft puzzles are intentionally designed to be both challenging and rewarding. Our goal as designers is to create a flow state where you're deeply engaged, having fun, and working toward that incredibly satisfying feeling of earned achievement.
To do this, we use every tool at our disposal to make your puzzling experience rich and unique. We often subvert typical solving strategies, which means some familiar tactics might lead you astray—what used to be a trick could now be a trap!
That said, here are a few tips to help you get started:
1. Ignore the edge.
We often hide the corner and edge pieces and include straight edges within the puzzle. Trying to start with the border might not be your best bet.
2. Start with unique shapes.
Rather than searching for edges, look for standout whimsy shapes—like the maple leaf. These are often distinct and easier to assemble. Once built, you can expand outward. Think of these clusters as growing crystals: eventually, they’ll merge together to complete the whole.
3. Try "blocking."
Group pieces by colour, texture (e.g., leaves, bubbles, brushstrokes), or shape. This can help narrow down where pieces belong and is especially effective with StumpCraft puzzles.
4. Skip the reference image.
While tempting, the image can actually slow you down. Instead of searching for where a piece fits visually, focus on physical fit and pattern recognition. This approach may take practice, but it’s worth it.
5. Use shapes to your advantage.
Our puzzles feature highly unique pieces. With time, your brain will start recognizing patterns in both the positive and negative space. It helps to give certain shapes nicknames—“giraffe,” “teapot,” etc.—to lock them into memory.
6. Work from the outside in.
Some puzzles have inner pieces surrounded by outer ones. It’s generally best to place the outer frame first, then work inward.
7. Master the “claw.”
Eventually, you’ll develop a one- or two-handed “claw” technique for moving piece clusters around. With just the right amount of pressure (not too much, not too little), you’ll be able to reposition larger sections as you go.
And remember—this is just the beginning. We’ll be sharing more tips and tricks along the way. Enjoy the journey, and happy puzzling!
Framing Your Puzzle
We recommend non-destructive framing methods, especially since many of our customers (and our team!) enjoy assembling their wooden puzzles multiple times and treating them as ever-changing displays of table art. That said, if you’re looking to create a permanent wall display, there are a few thoughtful ways to do so.
Before seeking custom framing elsewhere, we encourage you to check out our own puzzle frame collection—we offer custom-fit options for many of our designs that make it easy to showcase your completed puzzle beautifully.
When it comes to preserving the puzzle for framing, our top recommendation is using clear contact paper to secure and transfer the puzzle. This method is non-destructive, easy to reverse, and works well for moving your completed puzzle into a frame.
While some customers have used glue to mount their puzzles, we still recommend non-permanent methods like contact paper or puzzle tape—just in case you change your mind and want to enjoy assembling it again. We don’t recommend the “Mod Podge” method, as wooden puzzles are heavier and often exceed the bond strength of surface glues commonly used on cardboard puzzles.
Once your puzzle is secured, you can bring it to your local framer for a finishing touch. Frame of Mind in Edmonton is one shop we’ve seen do incredible work—check out their Instagram to see examples.
In general we are able to replace most pieces. If you find a piece missing when your puzzle has been solved, if the dog decides that our puzzles taste better than kibble, or for any other reason just fill out and submit our Piece Replacement Form.
If you do want to order from StumpCraft and are not in Canada, the USA, or the UK, we recommend setting up a freight forwarding account in the US. There are many good options for this but we can suggest a few:
MyUS - Reship - Stackry - Shipito
Should you still have questions about international shipping please reach out to us at puzzled@stumpcraft.com. Orders to other countries are handled through custom orders and shipping quotes.
Your tracking number was sent to you in an email that confirmed your order has shipped. We suggest checking your spam folder for that email. If you are still unable to locate your tracking number please submit a request for your tracking number via email at puzzled@stumpcraft.com.
Gift cards are available HERE.
They come in denominations up to $200.
We take great pride in crafting premium-quality puzzles that showcase the work of some of Canada’s most talented artists. When you purchase a StumpCraft jigsaw puzzle, you’re investing in a thoughtfully designed and beautifully made product—no discounts necessary.
That said, we do love to reward our community! We highly recommend joining our Puzzle Patron Rewards program. You’ll earn Puzzle Points for every purchase, referral, and review—these points can then be redeemed for coupon codes. This is the primary way we offer discounts on our puzzles.

We’re excited to offer two types of custom wooden puzzles, perfect for meaningful gifts, keepsakes, and special events:
1. Custom Puzzle
Upload your own photo, artwork, or image (you must own the rights to reproduce it), then choose your preferred cut theme. This puzzle includes approximately 225–250 uniquely cut StumpCraft pieces.

2. Special Event & Wedding Guestbook Puzzle
Also created using your own image (with reproduction rights), this version features 70 identically sized pieces (4 cm x 4 cm) connected with heart-shaped puzzle locks. It’s a beautiful way to commemorate weddings, family reunions, or corporate gatherings.
Click here for more information or to purchase.
Please note: We only offer both options for a limited time during the year. Production generally pauses around August and resumes in January. If ordering is temporarily closed, you’ll still have the option to select “Notify Me When Available.” You can confirm the actual cut-off date by visiting one of the product links above and scrolling to the last image, where current availability timelines are posted.
Puzzles listed as “Coming Soon” will appear as “Sold Out” until the design process is complete. Once finalized, they’ll be made available for purchase on our website.
For out-of-stock puzzles, our goal is to reprint them as soon as possible—though we prioritize restocking our most recently released designs first.
We update our webstore inventory every Monday at 10 AM Mountain Time, at minimum. If a puzzle is available to add to your cart, it means it’s in stock and ready to ship—we’ll process your order within two business days.
The scent is very much part of the charm of wooden puzzles like ours. It comes from the laser-cutting process, which uses a focused beam to precisely cut each piece. As the laser vaporizes the material, some of the organic molecules settle on the puzzle edges—leaving behind the signature chocolate-brown tint and a distinct “campfire” scent.
All wooden puzzles carry a similar aroma, though the exact smell can vary depending on the wood substrate used. Many people enjoy it, describing it as cozy and nostalgic, while others may find it a bit strong—especially at first.
If you have a more sensitive sense of smell, we recommend letting the puzzle “breathe” in a well-ventilated space (such as a garage or outdoor shed) for a few days. The scent will naturally dissipate over time.
